HUNTER financial institution Newcastle Permanent has entered the increasingly competitive credit card market.

The building society launched yesterday its own branded credit card, known as Value+.

Newcastle Permanent chief executive Fraser Read-Smith said the Visa-backed card was a significant step in the institution's development.

Mr Read-Smith said that Value+ enhanced the society's range of products and services.

"The card has a highly competitive interest rate of 8.99 per cent and an annual fee of just $38," he said.

"Importantly, the Newcastle Permanent owns the card and processes, and therefore will have control over the terms, conditions and administration."

The Value+ card will offer up to 55 days interest free credit on purchases and will have both internet and telephone access around Australia and overseas.
